Orlando handed over some melancholic chords during the summer of 2025, a time when all of us were being hit hard by events unfolding in America and across the world. I wrote the lyrics after a night without sleep, having made the mistake of opening social media and witnessing another group of Palestinians being murdered on my screen. The violence appeared sandwiched between funny, influencer-style videos in my algorithm, a contrast that made me feel sick to my core. The overall narrative of the song captures the guilt and rage of that feeling. The fact that we can consume content like this, be absolutely horrified, and then have the privilege to be able to turn off our phones or step away from social media and resume our lives as normal. At the end of the day, we live relatively cushy American lives - comfort that exists, in many ways, at the expense of others. That is the preface of the song. What follows is a question posed to ourselves, to each other, and to god themself.

For those reading this: Where do you find yourself in this conflict? Do you drive yourself crazy with the feeling of being powerless to effect change, and is that really true? Or vice versa - have you centered yourself so completely that you’ve stepped away from the narrative entirely? To ensure you keep your mind and the often complicated relationships that come with discussing “politics” stable. Politics in quotations because we are well beyond the point that this is a political debate - versus one of morals and basic human ethics.

It’s our belief that humans were innately gifted with the ability to critically think, create art, question our government, and even our own god. Ask yourself: where are you at this moment, and what are you doing to move the needle in a positive direction? When you see oppression, where do you stand? Below it as the oppressed, next to it as an ally, or above it - with your foot on its throat? This is us doing our best to stand against what we know to be wrong, by shouting at the rooftops - “This is where we are! Do not look away!”
